The Holy Qur’an is the most important source of understanding Islam in order to practice it. This course will introduce students to the development, methodology and schools of Qur’an exegesis (i.e. Tafseer). The entire field of Islamic scholarship is intended to be the means to the goal of practicing and applying the Qur’an. Using the different approaches of Tafseer, this course will outline the Qur’an’s approach to individual, societal and global issues that face Muslims in America and the world today.

Course Outline:
1. The purpose of the Qur’an
2. The Development of Tafseer fields in the early generations: Sahabah and their students
3. The recording of Tafseer
4. Tools necessary for interpretation of the Quran
5. Different styles and methods used to interpret the Quran
1. Narrative-based tafseer (tafseer Bil Ma’thur)
2. Reasoning-based tafseer (tafseer Bil ra’y)
3. Jurisprudence-based tafseer (Tafseer Al Ahkam)
4. Scientific interpretation of the Qur’an
6. Illustration of Tafseer approaches from original sources including the translations of the Quran
7. Subject-based tafseer (selected topics) including the following:
1. Qur’an and women
2. Qur’an and moral values
3. The Purpose of ibadat (acts of worship)
4. Qur’an and family
5. Relations between Muslims and non-muslims
6. Muslims in multi-religious and multicultural societies
